What Is Distance Learning & How Can It Help?

Distance learning is an educational process where students receive instruction through online classes, video recordings, video conferencing, or any other audio/visual technology medium. This helps enable students to receive an education without having to be physically present in a classroom. This is great for situations where instructors or teaching faculty can’t be physically present (such as online courses) or for social situations where meeting in person isn’t feasible.

Distance learning, also called remote education or online classrooms, is great for colleges or universities to conduct large lectures without students having to be present. This allows for a conducive, quiet learning environment that’s ideal for presenting educational material.

What Technology Do I Need to Get Started?

The technology you use to orchestrate your online classroom either makes or breaks your teaching effectiveness. One thing to consider is making sure you're using the best technology, designed with remote students in mind, to make your distance programs more effective.

RDI recommends quality audio-video systems that can support video conferencing for multiple users, a high-quality camera, and easy to use microphones.

• Video Conferencing: At RDI, we make it easy to implement video conferencing, the key to making synchronous distance learning possible. Without it, online classroom learning is limited to self-paced programs without individual-to-instructor interaction. Our pre-configured systems are compatible with applications like  Zoom, Webex, and Skype.
• Hardware: RDI also understands how important it is to have a camera and microphone set up in order to record classrooms and run video conferences. We provide web cameras with variable zoom to foster engagement with students.
